PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SPACES IN CHARLES DICKENS’S GREAT EXPECTATIONS

The purpose of this paper is to show the way in which a person/character constructs his/her identity by interacting with other people within certain private spaces and public places. The analysis of spaces in Great Expectations shows the characters, particularly Pip caught between “was” and “is”, “there” and ”here” in a process of becoming by folding and unfolding or by taking up roles, selves as a response to the spaces they inhabit.

THE SEEDS OF ALL EVIL: A STUDY OF IDENTITY DISORDERS IN V. S. NAIPAUL’S THE ENIGMA OF ARRIVAL

The present paper approaches V. S. Naipaul’s novel The Enigma of Arrival by a close analysis of the text with the goal of achieving a reordering of the elements building an individual’s identity. The whole thus created reveals the complexity of a personality confronted with identity disorders. The aim is to identify the working of the inner mechanism – the causes of disorders, their manifestations and development, and the reunderstanding of the self. // The analysis highlights the circumstances that give birth to a quest for identity, the way it is explored by the narrator and the attempt undertaken to arrive at self-knowledge. /7 This paper discusses the most important factor that explains the narrator's imbalance – i.e. history, in charge of an Indian's birth far from India. The study of the historical aspect entails a close study of the social context, which determines the character's separation from his family and community, also playing an important part in his losing the sense of stability.

Prozaické debuty let šedesátých

Au tournant des années cinquante et soixante, il entre dans la littérature tchèque une nouvelle génération des poètes et des romanciers. Leurs possibités de publier s’enrichissent grâce à la naissance de nouvelles revues littéraires et de nouvelles éditions. Les modifi cations de la norme esthétique sont d’abord suivies dans les discussions et des articles des critiques littéraires. Ensuite, on montre les modifi cations de la poétique (les poétiques) – insistant sur la prose experimentale – par le biais de l’interprétation de quelques livres et auteurs choisis – Alexandr Kliment (Setkání před odjezdem), Jiří Fried (Hobby) et Martin Friš (Svědectví o deštivém odpoledni ztráveném v čekání).

Od pekelných nocí k radostnému ránu (objev a omyl à la Páral)

The study corrects the idea of a sudden and surprising appearance of Paral’s typical creative method and points out that it had already been used, though in an embryonic form, in Paral’s fogotten novel Šest pekelných nocí (Six Infernal Nights) that had been published under a pseudonyme of Jan Laban before the publication of Veletrh splněných přání (A Fair of Fulfilled Wishes) a novel that is generally taken for Paral’s debut. Author of the study also proves that Irena Zítková, a publishing editor, played an important part in finalizing Veletrh splněných přání (and therefore even in finalizing Paral’s method). In its second part, the study tries to answer the question whether in the beginning of the 1970s, Vladimir Paral opportunistically conformed to the normalization policy of creating optimistic literary works or only realized the second part of his own literary project that he had planned before the change in the political climate. In the project, a sceptical (black) pentalogy should have been followed by a series of positive (white) proses. The reason why one of the most problematic parts of the white series, a novella titled Radost až do rána (Joy till the Morning) is rightfully considered as the author’s mistake should not been seen in Paral’s alleged conformity with the official policy but in unclear signals that the novel is a parody of the prescribed literary model.

The current study deals with the situation of Czech literary culture in the period of crisis of existing avant-garde concepts and European modernism. The crisis was a foretoken of the rising existential generation. In his existential reflections, Jindřich Chalupecký, Group 42’s generational critic and spokesman, attempted to define the position of art in the after-modern period. Emphasis was made on the authentic experience of a metropolitan periphery which helped to define the new thematic starting point of the Group 42 artists.

Omyly. Omyly… ale čí?

“Mistakes” of literary critique of the period are not necessarily caused by its incompetence. They very often are testifying on ideas of the period about what kind of the piece of art should look like and what function it should fulfill. They reflected not only aesthetical but also ideological criteria of the period. The study of such “mistakes” – the refusal of Mácha’s May is one among the famous ones – points to inner dynamics of the literary processes. The situation of the Czech Stalinism that was assessed by the critique of the period above all for its educative and persuasive function, and refusal of important literary works of the period that we today perceive as canonical works, was not a consequence of mistakes, errors and fallacies following misunderstandings but it was a consequence of the system of criteria that were an integral part of the socialist-realistic theory.

Vladimír Holan – strach, úzkost, nebo velikost obav?

Our paper deals with the differences concerning biographical data and textual analysis of Vladimír Holan’s poetry. The study tries to oppose the medical study of Holan’s personality published by Norbert Holub in Host magazine in 2005 (issue 7). We disagree with Holub’s conclusions that there are some inevitable parallels between Holan’s feelings of a fear in his real life, his mental state and the texts of poems of the collection of Bolest. The typology of Vladimír Holan’s poetry proceeds from existencial topics and themes among which the fear is one of the most dominating in all his work. Nevertheless, it is clear that it has always been connected with the power of exploration of the spheres of human being. In this sense, we necessarily cannot regard author’s subjects and lyric speakers of the poems as fearful or terrified. On the contrary, they realize the time and life limitations of a human life and they strongly resist against them (Holan himself resists through the words of the poems). Thus Holan’s ‘walls of the fear’ shows indisputable signs of the courage or fortitude.

Blíženci podobojí – výtvarná sblížení básníka Františka Halase

Dans les années trente et surtout à l’époque de la Seconde Guerre mondiale le poète František Halas consacre une grande partie de son oeuvre à la critique d’art plastique. Dans ses articles Halas prête attention aux expositions contemporaines et exprime l’enchantement suscité par son expérience esthétique individuelle. Parmi les artistes qu’il présente, Halas trouve également des collaborateurs qui illustrent plus tard ses recueils de poésie (Bohdan Lacina, par exemple). Protestant contre le nazisme, František Halas se trouve sous la menace d’emprisonnement, comme ses proches amis, les peintres et écrivains Josef Čapek et Emil Filla qui étaient déjà incarcérés dans les camps de concentration. Réagissant à la peinture contemporaine, ses comptes rendus présentent donc non seulement des analyses d’expression artistique mais aussi les attitudes morales de l’auteur même.

K některým polemickým aspektům Wollmanovy studie „K methodologii srovnávací slovesnosti slovanské“

The study deals with the controversy between the German historian Konrad Bittner and the Czech Slavist Frank Wollman. In the larger context of the Slavonic research of the time Bittner published in 1934 an opinion that in the whole of European culture the Slavonic literatures have an inferior a dependent position as a result of the historical development. To Bittner’s conclusions responses Frank Wollman referring to the structural variability of Slavonic literatures as well as to the principle of their organicity that enable them to enter into the context of the World literature.

Ženský román po roce 1990

The author suggests a redefinition of the term “feminine novel” by reserving it to those novelistic texts, whose implicit author, narrator and protagonist are feminine subjects, presenting feminine view and feminine speech. She discerns three various types of such feminine novels in contemporary Czech literature: the idylic, documentary and estethising. The last two she perceives as key and the most relevant ones.
