Summary/Abstract: Our paper deals with the differences concerning biographical data and textual analysis of Vladimír Holan’s poetry. The study tries to oppose the medical study of Holan’s personality published by Norbert Holub in Host magazine in 2005 (issue 7). We disagree with Holub’s conclusions that there are some inevitable parallels between Holan’s feelings of a fear in his real life, his mental state and the texts of poems of the collection of Bolest. The typology of Vladimír Holan’s poetry proceeds from existencial topics and themes among which the fear is one of the most dominating in all his work. Nevertheless, it is clear that it has always been connected with the power of exploration of the spheres of human being. In this sense, we necessarily cannot regard author’s subjects and lyric speakers of the poems as fearful or terrified. On the contrary, they realize the time and life limitations of a human life and they strongly resist against them (Holan himself resists through the words of the poems). Thus Holan’s ‘walls of the fear’ shows indisputable signs of the courage or fortitude.
