Pimen Constantinescu

Author(s): Rodica-Maria Volovici,Elena Mărginean,Florin Blezu / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2016

In the economy of the library of the “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu Romania, an important place is taken by the collection of about fifteen thousand volumes, mostly in the humanities. These were donated by Pimen Constantinescu, the first librarian and manager of the University of Cluj Library, Sibiu Branch. More than 515 reviews can be identified as part of the donor’s collection: many of these works are literary magazines, fiction, poetry, criticism and other writing. The aim of this study is to present a history of this valuable collection, from its establishment up until today. The research starts from the context which brought Pimen Constantinescu to Sibiu, his personality, his concerns and his motivations. Furthermore, we identify the growth and means of organisation of this cultural heritage that was threatened with destruction under the communist regime. There are no studies directly concerned with the history of this collection. We will however try to find links between Pimen’s appraisals on Romanian publishing activities and similar studies. Although Pimen subscribed to the most important journals in the country, we will focus especially on those which are less well-known, particularly emphasizing those less highlighted by studies on the Romanian history of press.

One of the most essential elements where technology and archiving match is the electronic description of documents. if it does not have the necessary metadata that make it descriptive, is not digitization, but just scanning. Meanwhile, an archive without media is incomplete, as it does not perform its functional task of guidance the researcher towards the document he requires. Consequently, the electronic description of the document enables the digitization to provide those information tools that help the researcher in finding the information he or she is looking for GDA will start this process in the coming months, in full compliance with international standards ISAD (G) and RIC.

Arkivistika dhe sfidat teknologjike: informatizimi i arkivave

Author(s): Elsa Saka / Language(s): Albanian Issue: 1-2/2019

The quick development of information and digital technologies has involved since its beginnings also the world of documentation. This has led to the production and distribution of computerized search tools, easy to use but refined in structure and functionality. This system has nurtured hopes for a new search tool, capable of creating a network of links between documents and reference sources, the ability to integrate knowledge and build links between distributed documentary entities: an easy-to-use cultural information system with endless possibilities that would enable the interaction between cognitive systems realized according to specific procedures and on the basis of different disciplinary traditions. The issue at hand is not in fact, as many blindly believe, entirely technological, but it is above all cultural: the real obstacle to the realization of integration between documentary sources consists of specific methodologies, which over time has tried to it becomes possible to access these resources, each of them in its own disciplinary environment.

Archives constitute the memory of nations and societies; they form the basis of their identity and are an essential element of informing society. By testifying to the activities carried out and the decisions taken, they at the same time ensure the continuity of the bodies as well as the justification of their rights, whether individual or state. Since archives guarantee citizens' access to administrative information and to the right of peoples to know their history, they are essential to the exercise of democracy, the taking of responsibilities from public power and better governance. Archiving represents a field of social activity and includes theoretical and practical problems related to the administration of documents of various types. The activity of the archive is the receipt, preservation, regulation and processing, microfilming, digitization and publication of the records that are part of the archival collections.

An archival research report on the activity of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Albania (1924-1943)

Author(s): Lida Miraj / Language(s): Albanian Issue: 1-2/2019

It has been possible to examine and copies of the correspondence between Albanian and Italian Governments in establishing the Italian Archaeological Mission, including some telegrams of Italian Legacies and, manuscripts by Ugolini himself, etc. These documents found in the Central Archives of the State in Tirana are found at the documentary funds of the Ministry of Education, the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Interior and the Italian Legacy in Albania. Based on these documents, the official date or the first step towards the realization of Italian archaeological excavations in Albania was taken on April 12, 1924, when the Ministry of Education notified the Ministry of Interior that Dr. L. Ugolini a, “well-prepared Italian archaeologist in the prehistoric studies” and “a friend of Albania” would be visiting. The Albanian Embassy in Rome had informed the Ministry of Education of his visit. The letter of Roberto Paribeni on March 15, 1925 confirmed the beginning of archaeological excavations. On October 14, the head of the Italian Legation of Durrës wrote to his office in Saranda that the Albanian President had ordered local authorities to permit archaeological excavations in Feniki (Phoinike). The archaeological excavations began only in December 1926 and were very successful. But a year later, in December 1927, Ugolini informed the Albanian Minister of Education that the Italian Mission proposed to change the place of archaeological excavations from Phoinike to Butrinti (near Vivari lake in Santi Quaranta), and begin on the January 15, 1928. Only in spring 1928 Ugolini moved from Phoinike to Butrinti. Ugolini excavated at Butrint for eight years (1928-1936) despite many health problems. The voluminous correspondence, preserved in the Archives, shows his special personality and great passion for archaeology. On the evening of October 4, 1936 Ugolini died in Italy. On December 4, 1936 the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Roberto Paribeni, President of Reale Istituto Archeologico, had proposed Pirro Marconi, professor of Archaeology and Art History at the University of Naples and University of Palermo, as the successor to Ugolini and to be named as the Head of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Albania. Marconi’s activity in Butrint lasted just one year, because of his tragic death, flying to Rome, in late April 1938. After his death the excavations continued in June and July under Igino Epicoco and later that year, in accordance with a proposal by Roberto Paribeni, Domenico Mustilli, professor at the University of Naples, was named the director of Italian Archaeological Mission. The Italian surrender of September 1943 effectively ended all Italian concern with Butrint and with the archaeology of Albania. Italy had other more pressing problems closer to home. 29 November 1944, the Liberation day of Albania, opened a new chapter in its long history, the period of communism or the so called ‘proletarian dictatorship’ and, archaeology came to be organized in a very different way.

Përballja e dy gjeneralëve: Pirro Mani – Serafin Fanko

Author(s): Driada Dervishi / Language(s): Albanian Issue: 1-2/2019

The National Theater, with an archive of plays put in this theater since 1945, has a large number of files of theatrical performances, which list the title of the play, author, director and year. In this archive, the file "The General of the Dead Army" contains important materials for one of the most dignified performances in the history of the Albanian Theater, staged in 1972 by the National Theater Troupe by director Pirro Mani. This play is a dramatization by the director himself, based on the novel with the same title by the great writer Ismail Kadare. The “General ”by Pirro Mani, another variant of this play is put, this time with the title“ Pilgrimage in anxiety ”, by the director Serafin Fanko. In the archive of the theater of this city, which begins its work in 1950, there is a large number of files, which, although fewer in number, are richer than those of the National Theater. Inside the file of the play "Pilgrimage in anxiety" of this archive, typed by the director himself, there is the text dramatized by the most representative director of this theater, Serafin Fanko, along with the directing platform. Both archives have, in addition to costume sketches, posters of each show, a considerable number of photographs taken during the shows. The photographic archive is of great importance for recording the history of Albanian directing in a period when performances were not recorded. Through them a mosaic of the visual way of constructing the show, mise-en-scène, makeup, costumes and scenography can be constructed. This visual documentation creates the opportunity also to get to know the great actors, and in the paragraph on actors, the photographs serve as a guide for the construction and conception of the characters visually. The photographs found in these files of the National Theater Archive and the “Migjeni” Theater Archive turn into a cognitive tool for future generations. Finding these materials of great importance for the theater in these archives was a discovery, without which we would not have been able to create a Confrontation between the generals of the Mani-Fanko theater, a study that has not been done to date.

Author(s): Hatice Oruç,Adnan Kadrić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 69/2020

The paper presents the vaqfiye of Soqollu Mehmed Pasha son of Gamal al-Din Sinan Beg, with a description of the books donated by the Grand Vizier for learning and education in his mosque at Azaplar Qapısı, in the Tomb of Soqollu in Eyup Sultan, the mosque in Luleburgaz, in the Fethiye madrasa in Istanbul, his haniqah and madrasa in Luleburgaz. The books were described in detail, and the vaqfiya itself was written by following the method of registration and catalog description of books typical for several vaqfiyas of notable persons in the Ottoman society of the mid-16th century. After the presentation of the books described in the waqfiya of Soqollu Mehmed Pasha, the paper is also dealing with the cultural aspect of the document itself. Just as the study and description of donated books in Mehmed Pasha’s madrasas and haniqahs are notable for studying the history of books, libraries, and science in the Ottoman education system in his time, they are also meaningful for understanding the character, spiritual and intellectual habitus of the man who donated books for the common good.

KOLEKCIJA GEOGRAFSKIH KARATA U GAZI HUSREV-BEGOVOJ BIBLIOTECI

Author(s): Ada Pilav / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 41/2020

Besides a multitude and great quantity of the archival material, the richness of Gazi Husrev-beg’s Library is reflected in a large number of geographical maps in different languages and from different time periods. The collection contains a significant number of topographical, thematic, straightforward and hand-drawn maps. This paper aims at presenting a collection of geographical maps, thus making information about this hitherto unknown collection available to research workers. While carrying out an analysis of geographical maps, the basic data was collected and listed (i.e. the publisher, the year and the place of map publishing- if there was such information on the map), and a brief desription was given by means of reading geographical signs. The geographical maps date back to different time periods, and most of them date back to the Austro-Hungarian period, starting from 1827, and also to the 20th century, the period of the SHS Kingdom (the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes) and Yugoslavia. There are also recent maps, to be sure, printed in the 21st century. The maps were made in different languages, and those maps that were made in Ottoman-Turkish and Arabic occupy a special place, as well as the maps in Latin which date back to different time periods. In September 2019, the Library got as a gift a large number of maps from a private collection owned by Professor Ibrahim Bušatlija, God rest his soul. The maps were examined and registered in the database of the Library’s stock of materials. The collection also includes three globes, two of which were made by hand.

Author(s): Vera Boneva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 2/2021

The current text is a review of Anna Angelova's book „Bulgarian Oldprinted Editions 1806–1878: A study of the collection of the Sofia University Library „St. Kliment Ohridski“, 416 p., hardcover. The book includes two author's studies, a catalog of printed editions, stored in the library, and 734 handwritten notes from books and newspapers, left as written traces by owners, readers, and donors. The publication of the notes and a part of the author's analyzes are assessed as contributions to the history of the book. A number of criticisms have been formulated regarding the language normalization of manuscripts and titles and regarding the numerous typographical errors, which are noticeable in the book. My recommendation is for a more in-depth and extensive analysis of the studied corpus. Anna Angelova's book gives me a reason to keep insisting on a full digital corpus of the Revival editions and full-text publications of all old printed books on the Internet, including handwritten notes on them.

Tiskane glagoljske liturgijske knjige u fondu knjižnice biskupija senjske i modruške u Senju

Author(s): Juraj Lokmer / Language(s): English,Croatian Issue: 1/2008

After the move of the bishop’s seat to Rijeka, in Senj, the centre of Senj and Modruš Bishopric, numerous valuable library collections of various church institutions preserved through the centuries and destruction in after the war period were left. The organizing of these collections at the end of the 1970s and during the 1980s a unique library collection was created under the name ‘Library of Senj and Modruš Bishopric’. In the collection of liturgy books are a significant number of books published in the glagolitic script and old Slavic languages from the period of 1631 to 1905, i.e. 1920. In this paper is given an overview of Croatian glagolitic printing from 1483 to 1905, i.e. 1927 with a description of the social situation and conditions in which was published a special edition of ‘Typographia Polyglotta S. Congregationis de Propaganda fide’. Furthermore described here are the preserved examples of printed glagolitic liturgy missals from the 17th century (Missal from 1631; 2 items, Breviary from 1688; 4 items), in the 18th century (Missal from 1706; 2 items, Breviary from 1741; 2 items, Extract from missal (Misi za umrše and Čin Misi) from 1741; 2 items, Breviary from 1791; 4 items) for the needs of glagolitic priests in Croatian countries as a means for the Catholic Church to approach Orthodox Slavs o then Balkan peninsula, in Walachia, Ukraine and Russia as well as editions which Anton Dragutin Parčić printed at the end of the 19th century (Missal from 1893; 9 items, Missal from 1896, 2 items, Missal for death from 1893; 5 items and Missal for death from 1894; 5 items) and Josip Vajs at the beginning of the 20th century (Missal from 1905; 10 items) dedicated exclusively for the needs of Croatian glagolitic priests. At the end there is given data about the printing of parts of glagolitic liturgic books in old Slavic languages in Prague (6 pages with a foreword from the mass dedicated to Our Lady and the mass for the dead printed in Prague in 1920) all the way to the edition in a Latin transcription of Parčić’s missal in Josip Vajs’ edition in 1927. Here is emphasized the need for the registration, conservation and restoration of glagolitic library collection as a witness of Croatian specificity within the European cultural and civilization community as well as need for better presentation of this heritage in the world for 500th anniversary of the end of work of Senj glagolitic press.

An aspect of local lamp production in the western Pontic region : the case of lamps of types Hayes/Saraçhane 9 and 10

Author(s): Florin Topoleanu / Language(s): English Issue: XXVIII/2019

Lamps of the Hayes 9 type were produced in huge quantities in the state workshops of the Eastern Roman Empire and in the Western Pontic ateliers, where the Hayes 8 lamps were also manufactured, especially in Constantinople and Halmiris. The shape of the lamps and the fabric argue in favor of this assumption, further supported by the dating of contexts recorded during the excavation of Dobrogean sites. Thus, the Halmyris workshop complex appears to stand out among the lamp-producing centers, at least in the Black Sea area, during Justinian’s reign.

The importance of the 145 lamps in this collection is twofold. Firstly, all the artifacts were offered to Max Kurt Forcart by the different directors of excavations operating legally in the Fayum area during the first two decades of the 20th century, giving us a clear—even if generic—finding area, contrary to collections purchased from the various antiquaries. And secondly, even if incomplete compared to the richness and diversity of the Fayum workshops, the chronological and typological range it covers makes it a perfect companion to the only two published and illustrated lamp catalogs of regular excavations made in the area: the early 1900s work of W.M.F. Petrie at Ehnasya and the later investigations by the University of Michigan team at Karanis. Also highlighted are the unique Fayum fashions and approaches to the importation, adoption or rejection of common types found in the Nile Delta, as well as the emergence of typically microregional subtypes as discussed by John W. Hayes.
