Участие России в формировании болгарской государственности

Author(s): Sergey Murtuzaliev,Mesedu Magomedova / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1-2/2014

At the end of the nineteenth century Russian civil administration governed the liberated territories of Bulgaria. It actively dealt with issues related to the restoration of Bulgarian statehood: the formation of an administrative apparatus, preparation of “Organic Chart” which later became constitution; the development of “Organic Statute” in Eastern Rumelia. It also ministered to the formation of the army and the education system of Bulgarian Principality. Russia prepared the ground for the later unification of the two parts of Bulgaria in one state.

Михаил Маджаров, видян през неговите архиви и творчество

Author(s): Rositsa Stoyanova,Veska Nikolova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2015

This article aims to focus on some outstanding moments of the life and work of the famous politician, parliamentarian, diplomat, journalist and superb chronicler of his time Mikhail Madzharov. The authors do it on the basis of stored archival materials and mainly of his personal diaries, which for the most part have not been published. They are stored in the untreated part of M. Madzharov’s personal archive fоnd at the Scientific Archives of BAS and therefore the authors use mainly excerpts, published at different times and in different editions; materials cited by him in memoirs, articles and books. Although sparse, these pieces of the archival wealth of Madzharov paint an unadulterated picture of the views, thoughts, hesitations and anguish of a decent Bulgarian. Apart from this, but in an organic connection with it, the article introduces the problem of the factors modeling personality such as it is.

От четничество към легален политически живот: ВМОРО след Младотурската революция

Author(s): Slavi Slavov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 5-6/2015

The Young Turk Revolution from the summer of 1908 led to a temporary democratization of the social and political life in the Ottoman Empire. Under the influence of the changed environment, the Internal Macedonian-Odrin Revolutionary Organization (IMORO) suspended its armed activity and legalized its bands. The organization actively participated in the establishment of political formations on Bulgarian national basis, temporarily removing from its program the achievement of “full political autonomy” for the regions of Macedonia and Odrin. Although legalized, IMORO retained its strong influence among the Bulgarian population in the Macedonia and Odrin regions. It was not officially disbanded and continued its existence, albeit in a highly altered form and in the conditions of a deep division within the revolutionary movement. This situation persisted until 1910 when, under the influence of the ever more complicating circumstances in the Ottoman Empire, the Internal Revolutionary Organization began to restore its structures and permanently oriented itself towards renewing the armed liberation struggle.

Дейността на петербургския руско-български дамски благотворителен комитет през Балканската война 1912 г.

Author(s): Annie Zlateva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2016

In the early days of the Balkan war, which began on October 5th, 1912 against Turkey, a Russian-Bulgarian Ladies Charity Committee was spontaneously founded in St. Petersburg. It included Bulgarians who resided in the city of Neva, and Russians who sympathized with the Bulgarian cause. The purpose of this committee was to assist the Bulgarian army that was fighting against the enemies at the most difficult Thracian Front. The Committee worked in parallel with The Slavic Charity Society and other similar newly established Russian unions and organizations. It coordinated its activities with the Bulgarian government and personally with the Bulgarian plenipotentiary Sava Bobchev. On the basis of the newly published archival materials and documents, the article clarifies moments from the history of the establishment and organization of the Russian- Bulgarian Ladies Charity Committee, its links with the Bulgarian representation in St. Petersburg and the specific use of the collected volunteer amounts. In the article, for the first time, attention is paid to Queen Eleonora’s participation and activity as a representative of the Bulgarian Red Cross and her help in the rational packing of consignments, containing sanitary materials, food and clothes necessary for the needs at the battlefield. The paper gives an opportunity to trace the voluntary participation of representatives of all branches of the Russian community to assist to allied countries against Turkey and in particular to Bulgaria and its “valiant and incredible brothers in arms”.

Права и компетенции на българските държавни институции Обикновено народно събрание и Велико народно събрание (1879–1947 г.) и тяхната роля за консолидиране на нацията

Author(s): Yordanka Gesheva / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2017

The author describes the rights and competences of the Ordinary and Grand National Assemblies, as defined by the Tarnovo Constitution from 1879. The author focuses on the relationship between Ordinary National Assembly and the prince institution; the rights and obligations of the Head of State for the establishment and dismissal of governments. Here are also described the possible variants in case of vote of non-confidence in the government by the parliament and the options for the Head of State. The author discusses the political practice in Bulgaria, electoral laws, voting rights for citizens, and the imposed restrictions. The place and role of the two types of Assembly in the Bulgarian political life are of high importance, as well is their ability to assert their independence in relation to the other institutions and the strong personalities of the day.

К вопросу о политике идентичности правительства Стефана Стамболова в Болгарии

Author(s): Dmytro Mykolenko / Language(s): Russian Issue: 1/2017

The methodological basis of our study is the concept of Eric Hobsbawm, set out in the book “Nations and Nationalism since 1780”. It describes the stages of nationalism development in Europe and gives possibility to overview the process of nation building in the last third of the XIX – early XX century. Based on it, we formulate our working hypothesis: the initiatives of “stambolovist” government used to meet the European principles of identity but also had its own features, resulted from specifics of social and political development of Bulgaria. Identity politics carried out by S. Stambolov government can be divided into four elements. First is symbolization of space – applying the formal (Constitution, monarchical institution) and informal symbols (San Stefano Project) of the state, through which Bulgaria declared its identity and sovereignty. Second is ritualization of their belonging to the community, including regular festivals and events of Bulgarians (Liberation Day of the country from the Ottoman yoke, the Day of the connection), that made them relevant to the one nation. The third – formation the ideas “we are community”, applying the term “Bulgarian nation” with inherent ethnic, cultural and political features. The fourth – setting the boundaries “native – foreigner” to counter Bulgarians to Serbs, Greeks, Russians and Turks.

The article is dedicated to the history of one family, whose members have had a prominent place among the ranks of the Bulgarian military elite. The story about the personal and professional path of Colonel Boris Chilingirov is situated at the middle ground between the topics "elite" and "People’s court" and it also contains details about certain moments of the lives of his father and his first-born son. The goal is to use this particular example in order to show some of the mechanisms and paths, which were used in the crushing of the Bulgarian military elite after September 9th 1944.

Ivan, Hristo and their sister Maria Kesyakov are among the donators of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. All three are from a prominent family from Koprivshtitsa and the brothers are alumni of Polish schools. In December 1932, the Managing Board of the BAS founded one of the biggest donation funds, entitled donation fund “Kesyakov”, with the donation of 212 nominal bonds amounting to 100,000 BGN. The donation fund was founded with the intention of awarding different historical works in Polish and Bulgarian, various translations, scientific works and works of fiction, as well as research literature dedicated to the life and deeds of Michal Czajkowski (Sadyk Pasha) and to the Congregation of the Resurrection. The goal of this award was to encourage works which facilitate the rapprochement of the Bulgarian and Polish nations and to promote “Bulgarianness”. From 1934 until 1941, BAS awarded famous translators of works in Polish and authors writing on subjects related to Poland, among which were Anastasia Gancheva-Zografova, Dora Gabe, Hristo Vakarelski, Georgi Kertev, I. Kamburov, Slava Shtiplieva, Tsvetana Romanska-Vranska, Veselina Genovska-Gercheva, and others. The awards of the donation fund “Kesyakov” serve as a stimulus for people working as translators from Polish and for the general reception of their works and research on people of Polish descent living in Bulgaria.

ВМОРО и надзора над стопанския живот в Македония и Одринско (до навечерието на Балканските войни)

Author(s): Elena Aleksandrova / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1-2/2017

The article explores the economic policy of the IMARO (Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization) in Macedonia and Eastern Thrace in the period to the Balkan wars, illustrating its effect on the local population. The mechanisms through which IMARO entered the economic everyday life of both areas and the results of these actions are presented. On the basis of rich source material the concrete interventions in the sphere of agriculture, urban economic life and the tax system are highlighted. Tracing of the elements of this economic policy, known as ‘disciplinary process’, the importance of the change in the economy in both areas for both the Organization itself and the population is clarified. It is shown how with its concrete activities of social control over the everyday life IMARO managed to fulfill its program maximum in the field of economy in the villages and cities of Macedonia and Eastern Thrace. As a result, a process of disintegration of the Ottoman agrarian system began in both areas, and the tax revenues to the treasury were shifted to the organizational funds as a serious revenue. To a lesser extent, unlike agriculture, the Organization was able to set foot on urban markets as well.
