Summary/Abstract: As an important feature of one political regime, the pattern of civil-military relations could serve as an assessment tool in research of regime’s democratic or undemocratic nature. In this article civil-military relations during El’tsin’s first presidential term were analysed on the basis of political and military establishments’ attitudes towards the norm of the military noninvolvement in domestic politics. This norm was particularly challenged in 1991-1995 period in Russia during three crucial events: August 1991 coup, October 1993 Parliament bombing and the launching of the First Chechen War in 1994.
