Comparison of Differences Regarding Alcohol Consumption and Attitudes to Health Warning Labels in 2015 and 2020

Summary/Abstract: Background: Alcohol consumption is one of the four main risk factors for non-communicable diseases. The safest way to consume alcohol is to not consume any. Raising health awareness about the harmful effects of alcohol is one of the forms of prevention of excessive alcohol consumption and is also an essential part of the National action plan for problems with alcohol for 2021 - 2030 in the Slovak Republic. Aim: To compare the difference in alcohol consumption and attitudes towards to health warning labels on alcoholic beverages among adolescents and young adults. Methods: The data were obtained from two cross-sectional studies, in which we monitored attitudes to the regulatory measures in young people aged from 15 to 29 years. The studies were carried out in 2015 and 2020. The data were collected through an anonymous questionnaire and evaluated in the ISBM SPSS statistical program v. 19. Results: Since 2015, the proportion of respondents who engaged in binge drinking has decreased. Regarding the specific reasons for binge drinking, the highest proportion of respondents said that they binge drank because it encourages them and they feel relaxed afterward. Since 2015, the proportion of respondents who think that a warning label on alcoholic beverages would matter as well as those who think that a warning label would affect their consumption has increased. Conclusion: Excessive alcohol consumption and binge drinking are still current public health problems in the Slovak Republic. It is important to continue in informational and educational activities aimed at raising awareness about harmful use of alcohol.
